Patsy Pope, Jr. is a fourth generation Californian who has made her home in Calistoga for over 25 years. She grew up in farming and ranching with parents, George and Patsy, who raised all kinds of things including cattle, sheep, vineyards, almonds and some amazing race horses, including Decidedly who won the Kentucky Derby in 1962 and Mysterious who won both the The Classic 1000 Guineas at Newmarket and the Oaks at Epsom in 1973. Patsy’s best friend and closest confidant as a child was a Pinto pony named Lucky that had been bought by her grandfather, Bill Moffat. Her mother introduced her to the joys of gardening which instilled a deep affection and curiosity for watching things grow. The family’s roots are deep in the California soil and the love of the land spans the generations and has always been both a way of life and a passion.

Patsy has traveled the world. She worked for both Royal Cruise Line and Seabourn Line, has been to five continents and hopes someday to see the other two. She lives on a small farm with dogs, cats, goats, chickens and a bee hive. Yes, she has the full suit and the smoker; when she discovered that she is allergic to bees, rather than get rid of the hive, she got all the right tools and an Epi-pen. In 2012, winemaker Fernando Candelario made a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon from the wonderful Frediani vineyard in Calistoga for Vörös Cellars, producing just 105 cases. In 2013 and 2014 we were able to obtain some of the most sought after fruit in the valley from Atlas Peak. This year we are bringing our Carbernet back to Calistoga and have a multi year contract with our neighbor for The Savage Estate Vineyard fruit and we are thrilled about that. In 2014 we added a Chardonnay to our varietals and then in 2015 we made a Knight’s Valley Malbec from the Blau vineyard and we are also buying some Merlot from them this year. Our plan is to continue purchasing grapes from these amazing growers. We use only 100% french oak barrels to age all of our wines. We add as little as possible in the winemaking process, allowing the fruit to speak for itself.
Fernando and Patsy share a common goal, which is to produce wonderful handmade wines in small lots for you to enjoy now or to cellar for decades, if you have a patient nature. We believe in honor, integrity, hard work and having fun. Life is too short not to surround yourself with people who want to celebrate the joy in this world. At Vörös Cellars, we rejoice in the natural beauty that surrounds us and try to reflect that in all we do. We raise a glass to you. Cheers!
